Why Your ChatGPT or Claude Website Won't Go Live (and How to Fix It)

You generated a website with ChatGPT or Claude, tried to put it online, and something went wrong. Before you give up, know this: almost every "it won't go live" problem comes down to one of a handful of causes, and each has a simple fix. Here's how to diagnose yours.

1. The HTML is incomplete

The most common issue: you only copied part of the code. A complete web page starts with <!DOCTYPE html> and ends with </html>. If your AI's response was long, it's easy to grab only the middle, or to miss the closing tags.

Fix: go back and copy the entire code block. Check that it starts with <!DOCTYPE html> and ends with </html>. If the AI split the code across multiple messages, ask it to "give me the complete file in one block."

2. It's a React component, not a plain HTML file

Sometimes AI tools — especially Claude — build interactive pages as React components rather than plain HTML. React needs a build step to run, which is why pasting it into a simple host does nothing useful.

Fix: ask the AI to convert it. A prompt like "give me this as a single self-contained HTML file with all CSS and JavaScript inline" usually does the trick. A single HTML file publishes instantly with nothing to build.

3. You're stuck in GitHub or a build tool

If a tutorial sent you to GitHub Pages, Netlify, or Vercel and you hit a wall of Git commands and build settings, that's not you failing — those tools are built for developers.

4. Your custom domain is stuck on "Pending"

If your site works on its subdomain but your custom domain won't activate, the issue is almost always DNS.

Then wait — DNS propagation can take a few minutes up to 24 hours. Click "check and activate" again after waiting.

5. Images or styles are missing

Your page loads, but images are broken or it looks unstyled. This happens when the page references files that live somewhere else — the AI assumed images or stylesheets that aren't included.

Fix: the cleanest approach is a self-contained page. Ask the AI to inline the CSS and use images hosted at public URLs (or upload images to your host and use the links it gives you). If everything the page needs is inside the file or loaded from a public address, it renders correctly.

6. You can't log in to publish

Sometimes the blocker is simpler: you can't get into your account. After several failed login attempts, many hosts temporarily lock access as a security measure.

Fix: wait about fifteen minutes and try again, or use a magic-link login if your host offers one, which emails you a one-time access link.
