Can AI Agents Like Cursor and Windsurf Deploy Websites Automatically?

Update (September 2026)

Using Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Cursor? You no longer need an API key: connect Hostilo as an MCP connector and your AI publishes the site itself.

AI coding agents like Cursor and Windsurf have changed how people build software. You describe what you want, and the agent writes the code. But there's a natural next question: once the agent has built your website, can it also publish it — put it online — without you copying files around by hand? The answer, increasingly, is yes.

What "deploy" means for an agent

For a human, deploying a website means getting the finished code onto a host so it has a public URL. For an AI agent to do this automatically, it needs a way to talk to a host programmatically — an API. An API is just a set of web addresses the agent can send requests to: "here's my HTML, publish it," or "update this existing site with new code." If a host offers one, an agent can deploy on your behalf.

How it works with Hostilo

Hostilo has an API designed for exactly this. The flow is simple:

Example agent instructions

You can drop something like this into your agent's rules (for Cursor, that's a .cursorrules file):

You are an autonomous Hostilo agent. You can publish code.
Base URL: https://hostilo.app/api.php
Auth Header: "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Actions:
1. GET ?action=list_sites (see existing projects)
2. POST ?action=update_site (upload new code)
   Body: {"site_id": 123, "html": "<!DOCTYPE html>..."}

Now when you ask your agent to "update my landing page and publish it," it can write the code and push it live in one step.

Tip

Requests are rate-limited (for example, 60 per minute per key) so an agent can't accidentally hammer the service. Well-behaved agents simply pace themselves.

Why this matters

This closes the loop between building and publishing. Instead of "agent writes code → you copy it → you paste it into a host → you save," it becomes "agent writes code → agent publishes." For people building lots of small sites, or iterating rapidly, that's a real time-saver. It also means your site can be updated by automation — a scheduled agent could refresh content without you lifting a finger.

Do you need to be technical to use this?

To set up the agent workflow, a little comfort with configuration helps. But here's the reassuring part: you don't need any of this to use Hostilo normally. If you're a non-technical creator, copy-paste publishing is more than enough. The agent API is a power-user feature that's there when you want it, not a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Which agents can deploy to Hostilo? Any tool that can make web requests with an API key — Cursor, Windsurf, custom scripts, or autonomous agent frameworks. The API is standard, so it's not limited to one tool.

Is it safe to give an agent my API key? Treat the key like a password. It only controls your sites, and you can regenerate it anytime if you suspect it's exposed.

Can an agent create brand-new sites, or only update existing ones? Both — the API supports listing, creating, and updating projects.

Do I have to use the API at all? No. It's optional. Normal copy-paste publishing works completely without it.
